Checkered Pattern Typography

Hi....  ^^
Picture above is an assignment from my typography lecturer for last semester.
He asked us to create typography using checkered pattern.

Assignment: Typography
Theme: Checkered Pattern
Color: Colorful
Media: A3 Paper
Number of Rows: 5
Number of Columns: 8
Total Rows x Columns 40Boxes
Font: Up to you (I chose Stencil)
Words: Name (My Name)
Printing: Art Paper 210gram
Software: Adobe Illustrator

When I started doing my assignment, I felt so confused to match boxes one by one. But I finally realized that all I tried to do just wasting my time at all. I didn't find out any tutorial about checkered pattern typography or maybe I dont even knew what was exactly the name of this assignment. I did many mistakes. Create one and Erase one, and so on and so on.... Until I found an easy peasy way to make it.

Just played with some layers, one layer per one word or two words. U have to create one basic layer to estimated the grid. Then I create one new layer above each single word. At new layer I made rectangle same size as A3 then  I used path and split into grid (put the number you need) with 0 gutter.
Then u can starting like kids drawing: coloring ^^, Active the word layer and background layer then make clipping mask. Ta... Da.... Done.... Easy Peasy...
U can coloring the boxes when the basic layer is active.

Picture above is my creation for checkered pattern typography.
Hope ya like it guys... ^^,

Thank you for reading, Regina
